Motivation

Jewelry has always been my greatest interest. In 1999 I started at the art academy in Maastricht and continued studying contemporary art at the University of Amsterdam. I enjoyed working in a Utrecht gallery, with Dutch Design collections and with the jewelry collection at the CODA museum. After a switch to management positions in heritage, I have returned to the arts after ten years. As director at the Parkvilla cultural center (film house, theater, creative courses, cultural education and festivals), but especially as a maker, designer and goldsmith.

At the end of 2022 I founded Studio Bernadine Ypma and since 2023 I have had a studio in Utrecht at the creative hub Hof van Cartesius. There I create my own collections and work on commission. How wonderful to be working with my greatest love again!

Inspiration

When I walk through cities I am fascinated by how the architecture and art surrounds me. I want to be able to carry that feeling with me, the impressive, creative and powerful one. That's why I make jewelry inspired by my favorite art and architectural styles. Architecture and art that you can carry with you, that surrounds you.

Examples of the design process

I write blog posts to explain to my customers the process of making my jewelry. On my website page Work in progress I take them from inspiration through design to the final piece of jewelry.

Collections

The Brut collection

For men and women

The Brut collection was designed with the ambition to create a collection that appeals to both men and women.

Bold and powerful

Brutalist buildings are striking, imposing and geometric. The architectural movement Brutalism was popular from the 1950s to the 1980s. I love this functional and raw style of architecture. It inspired me to design a collection that is bold and powerful.

The Pop collection

Freedom and cheerfulness

The Pop collection is a cheerful collection inspired by pop art and Memphis design. The character of Memphis Design that started in Milan in the early 1980s was one of liberation and joy with bold colorful and geometric patterns.

A festive collection

This cheerful collection is designed to radiate the festive energy of Pop art and Memphis Design.

The Lumen collection

Elegant and fresh

The Lumen collection is an elegant and fresh collection. Natural gemstones in spring colors combined with timeless silver necklaces, earrings and rings.

Color and light

During my visits to museum exhibitions, I am struck by a bright light in the residual space of an image, the relief of the painter's touch and the use of color, contrasting or soft. At such a moment the design process for a new piece of jewelry begins.
